Women of the World Festival Melbourne

Women of the World Festival Melbourne is a three-day festival of critical conversations, music, film and performance, celebrating women and taking an in-depth look at the remaining challenges to gender equality, to be held at Footscray Community Arts Centre from Thursday 23 March – Saturday 25 March 2017.

With Footscray Community Arts Centre being home to many international communities with both local and global contexts, WOW Melbourne will mirror this diversity in all of its intersections across themes, challenges and celebrations.

It is our great pleasure to release program highlights ahead of a full program launch in February 2017.

The WOW Melbourne Keynote & Conversations program brings together activists, writers, artists and educators who are changing the conversations in their fields. Starting the day with a keynote address by leading Indigenous women, we will explore different ways to frame our conversation.

We are pleased to share that we will be joined by Paola BallaElaine Brown, Tania CañasMargaret Harvey, Maria Katsonis, Jerril Rechter, Sadaf Saaz and Zenith Virago, with more to be announced.

WOW Bites

Each WOW Bite features six everyday women from all walks of life sharing their ideas and experiences, uncovering their incredible lives, in short bursts of six minutes each.

WOW Speed Mentoring

Take 15 minutes and ask the questions that fuel your passion! Leading women in their fields talk one-on-one with participants to delve into the questions of lifetimes. Featuring leaders with invaluable experience and generosity, across business, health, education, the arts and industry.


WOW isn’t just about conversations, you can also expect to be immersed in thought-provoking performances, interactive workshops, pop-up performances, film screenings, exhibitions, markets and much more.

A collaboration between South Asian, South East Asian and Australian women artists and activists.

Mum Is The Medicine

FCAC’s Indigenous Cultural Program has developed an exciting new program for mothers who are also artists, as part of WOW Melbourne.

WOW Closing Party

A free outdoor concert celebrating the diversity and brilliance of female musicians from the local to the global stage closes WOW Melbourne 2017, with a focus on artists who drive social change through their music. Confirmed acts include Emma Donovan & The Putbacks, Black Sistaz and Sugar Fed Leopards.

One Night Stanza

Returning in its fifth year and featuring an all female line up for this special WOW Melbourne edition.

Blood, Sex & Tears

An intimate sound installation. Part conversational, part confessional, all real life. A Blood, Sex & Tears caravan will be parked at WOW Melbourne, collecting and presenting your stories throughout the Festival.


Devised and directed by award-winning image-based theatre-maker Jessica WilsonPassenger is a theatre work which places its audience inside a moving suburban bus. A conversation is heard onboard and – as we gaze at the passing world outside – we find ourselves affected in our ‘seeking’.

Weaving Country

Curated by Vicki Couzens and Hannah Presley this exhibition is a celebration of the remarkable unbroken practice of weaving and fibre craft in Victoria.

Ngeerang Ngart Kakay

Bronwyn Razem’s practice involves an exploration of her Indigenous heritage and identity. In this work she uses traditional techniques in a contemporary art setting, celebrating language, family and renewal.

WOW Marketplace

WOW Marketplace is home to a range of the most creative work by local designers, artists and makers, showcasing the innovation of local businesses and Festival partners. It’s a central meeting point where people can gather, get information, be inspired, do some shopping and network.

WOW Café

A lush and inviting pop-up venue on the lawns of FCAC, WOW Café will feature a free-to-the-public curated program of WOW Melbourne highlights, including streamed keynotes, talks and performances, and refreshments. It’s a free daily taste of WOW Melbourne for everyone.
